Sanapur Lake is easily one of those 'secret attractions' around Hampi.
The lake is formed by the reservoir built in the boulder hill valley.
The natural lake with stunning boulder hills all around makes the theme of this locale.
The road you'll take to reach Sanapur Lake will wind through paddy and banana plantations , before it wiggle around massive boulders precariously overhanging onto the road. Drive to Sanapur Lake and the ambient around the lake has character, you'll savour.
You'll also find local village folks offer coracle ride (fun ride) on the lake.
Sanapur Lake is still a less frequented place. You'll not find a large tourist crowd in this locale.
Sanapur is on the opposite side of the river, if you are traveling from Hampi side of the river Tungabhadra. From Virupapur Gaddi (the ferry point near Virupaksha Temple), Sanapur Lake is about 4km. The most convenient way to reach Sanapur is to rent a scooter or bicycle from Virupapur Gaddi area.
From Virupapur Gaddi and Anegondi: Drive westward on the Huligi-Gangavati Road (the main road in this area). The main road will pass through the Sanapur Village (the first large village after Virupapur Gaddi), about 2½km from Virupapur Gaddi junction (old Stone Bridge junction) and 8km from Anegundi town square. Leave the main road at the village and turn right. The lake will appear in 1km. Drive over the bund road, that runs parallel to dam.
The road will now wiggle past a few giant boulders. You'll find the small parking area under a peepul tree on the edges of the lake.
From Hampi: If you're already on a bike/bicycle, get to the ferry point near Virupaksha Temple and cross the ferry with your bicycle/bike. Follow the route described above.
Those driving car from Hampi side, it's a 25km round about route to Sanapur Lake. First head to Kamalapura. Turn left towards Kampili at the Kamalapura Junction. About 8km from Kamalapura, you'll reach a place called Bukkasagara. Take the left turn towards Anegundi (Gangavathi Road). In a while you'll cross the river.
After the river crossing, turn left towards Anegundi. As you reach anegondi, you'll see a fuel station on your left. A little ahead the road will bend right (the straight fork goes to Anegundi town). Take the right bend. Sanapur village is about 8km from this fork.
Public Transport
Catch a Huligi-Gangavati local bus from Anegundi or Virupapur Gaddi junction on the main road. Get down at Sanapur village bus top. It's a 1km walk to the lake from the Sanapur bus stop on the main road. You'll find a bus in 15 to 30minutes.
Sanapur is a relatively remote place. Apply your judgement if venturing alone, especially during the night.
Boulders in water is slippery. Avoid getting into water, as one cannot judge the depth and undercurrents of water in the boulder strewn lake.
You'll also find warning notices against diving and swimming. You may not find them easily, beware the water has crocodiles !
By the way, what it says is to take care of your valuables and do not venture into the water.

Bikes are fun and convenient way to explore Hampi and its neighbourhoods.
There are plenty of such sights on the way to Sanapur, where the boulders precariously balances one over another.
Hire a bike or bicycle from Hampi, Virupapur Gaddi or Anegondi. This is the most convenient way to visit Sanapur Lake.
