Tenali Rama's Pavilion

T

his partly collapsed pavilion is located on a shrubby hillock at about 100 meters northwest of the Zenena Enclosure. The village trail in front of the Zenena Enclosure, running northward, gives access to this monument.

Architecturally this is not an exceptional structure worth a special mention. The design of it is just like the many such you can spot at Hampi.

However, Tenali Rama, after whom the pavilion is named, is a legendary figure in south Indian folklore. Known for his quick wits and exceptional poetry, Tenali Rama was one of the eight celebrated poets (Astadiggajas) of king Krishnadeva Raya’s court.

The closeness of this pavilion to the royal area and the vantage position over the hillock speaks of its status.
