Srinagarada Hebbagailu

T

he local name 'Srinagarada Hebbagilu' literally means the Beautiful Gateway. Standing at the northeast corner of the royal area, this was one of the main entrance points to the inner core of the capital. It’s so huge a gateway that a couple of shrines were functioning inside the structure.

What you can see now is the tower-less structure with remains of many temple structures around. The most noteworthy of the temples is the one located at the northwest corner just outside the wall.

The gateway compound is aligned in a tentative northeast direction. Two arched entrances - one at the northwest and the other at the southwest – define the entrance and exit points of the compound.

The structure is made in the typical Vijayanagara style with rectangular dressed stone layers filled with rubble inside. But much of the structure is now roofless except the shrines and the temple at the outer corner.

This is a relatively lonely area except the cattle herds and the lone shepherds move around near the large grass field. The north of it is the foothill of a boulder hill chain. At the east lies the grassland. The immediate vicinity of the gateway is covered with shrubs. A Shepherd's’ trail runs through the centre of the gateway. This less trodden trail connects the Octagonal Bath with the Zenena Enclosure area.

You can reach here either from the Octagonal Bath or from the Zenena Enclosure area. From Zenena Enclosure, it’s at about ¼ km in a northeast direction; From the Octagonal Bath it’s about 1 kilometer in a northward direction.

From Zenena area, you'll pass through the recently renovated Parshwanatha Temple (Jain Temple ) and the Vishnu Temple. Visit this area as part of Route 3 described in the Hampi Itinerary map.
