A Forgotten Empire Vijayanagar

A Forgotten Empire Vijayanagar: A Contribution to the History of India by Robert Sewell is arguably the first serious attempt to narrate the history of this fallen empire in a systematic way.

n his book Sewell puts in perspective the political background of south India that eventually led to the founding of Vijayanagara. Further he narrates the rise of the kingdom that systematically expanded to the whole of south India.

The the book then narrates the events that led to the fall of Vijayanagara.

A highlight of the book is the translations by Sewell the of two chronicles by Domingo Paes and Fernao Nuniz who lived in Vijayanagara during its prime periods.

Robert Sewell

His aptly titled book, A Forgotten Empire Vijayanagar: A Contribution to the History of India written published in 1900 is still considered as seminal work on this South Indian empire that was left buried in the otherwise overwhelming history of India.
