This is the name of the ancient capital that's now popularly called Hampi. Vijayanagara literally means the “City of Victory”. Interestingly the its power of influence - spanning a greater part of the peninsular India during its peak - was also called Vijayanagara Empire.
Though the edifices of Vijayanagara period is scattered across many parts of South India, the highest concentration of monument are still around Hampi.
